Bacon Chase: When Satire Becomes Reality

There's a new race coming to Chicago this summer:


It's a race dedicated to... oh, you guessed it already: bacon.

There's UNLIMITED bacon along the course and UNLIMITED bacon at the finish line. And a Bloody Mary.

Sounds pretty sweet - obviously not healthy at all since a 5K only burns about 300 calories but still, sounds good.

But the part where satire becomes reality is that along with the 5K course there is also a .05K course. For real. .05K. That you sign up for, officially. That's pretty funny. Except that The Onion invented the .05K two years ago to make fun of Paula Deen. And now fake news creates real events.

Excerpt from The Onion:
"This .05K walk may be one heck of a challenge, but it's for such a good cause I'm darn sure gonna finish it."

I can just imagine people saying that on the morning of June 7th in Montrose Harbor. I'll probably hear them say it. Because I'll be there. Eating ALL THE BACONS.

A few weeks ago I was looking through the race listings for the month of February and noticed that there are three different races this coming Sunday. All in different cities. As I was trying to decide which one to run I realized that they're all taking place at different times... and then I started thinking... Why not just run all three? I talked to my running homey Antonio and after some discussion about logistics, we realized that based on the timing and location of the races, this would be an insane dash from Chicago to Highland Park to Hoffman Estates to Channahon and back to Chicago, with just enough time to park, get our bibs, run the races and (after carefully stretching, of course) head off to the next one. If you were outside running yesterday, or even if you were just sitting inside looking out the window, you are probably aware that yesterday was a terrible weather day. All day. The temperature stayed between 34 and 40 with freezing rain falling on and off throughout the day.
