Terrapin 5K Makes One Last Appearance in Chicago

If you've read about RAM Racing's Terrapin 5K over the last few years (maybe here or maybe over at Fuzzy's blog, or really all over the place) then you know what the basic theme is. If not, then you should know that it's a 5K nestled in a music festival and it usually takes place the Thursday night before Lollapalooza starts. This year, though, it's on Thursday, July 2nd. Fittingly. It's the Thursday before The Grateful Dead perform together one last time at Soldier Field. 

And it's the last Terrapin 5K. Mirroring the final performance by The Dead, the Terrapin website claims that the "Terrapin 5k is Headed Back to Chicago for One Last Time!" I checked with RAM Racing on this one to make sure it wasn't a publicity stunt and a representative confirmed: "This is the last time we are doing this race."

So if you've never run it before - I highly recommend you get out there next month and check it out! And if you have run it before, then you know it's worth checking out "one last time." (For context, it was one of my top 5 5Ks in both 2012 and 2013 - in other words, it's a good race.)

The post-race party is essentially a music festival - this year the band Old Shoe will be performing Grateful Dead songs. And you don't have to run the race to check out the music. Beer will be available for purchasing (and drinking after being purchased) for $5 (or 5 for $20) and runners get one "free" (come on, you paid for the race) Magic Hat beer to start out. Runners also get some fancy pizza and brownies too.

The "festival grounds" (Arvey Field, in Grant Park) open at 4pm and the race starts at 6:30pm.

    I'm so freaking excited about this! Bob Weir is going to get one last run in! (which will be my first run of the year, so Bob's gonna be kinda slow...)

    Then the next day, Fuzzy and I are GOING TO SEE THE GRATEFUL DEAD! They released a handful of tickets last Friday, and somehow, I light shined on me and I was able to get a pair. Amazing.

    I was disappointed when they changed the name to the bland/generic to "Rock the Night" last year. I liked the Terrapin name and the ersatz "Dead Head" vibe and music. Too bad it will be no more...

Remember when race shirts were pretty much guaranteed to be over-sized white cotton, seemingly designed so that you could wear them once (if you really wanted to show that you ran the race) and then probably never again? One side had the race logo and the other had about 20 sponsors. And the long-sleeve ones had little cuffs at the wrists to make sure you got that nice puffed sleeve look that no one has ever asked for. Chicagoland's First Annual February Fool's Goal Half Marathon/Debacle Completed!

If you were outside running yesterday, or even if you were just sitting inside looking out the window, you are probably aware that yesterday was a terrible weather day. All day. The temperature stayed between 34 and 40 with freezing rain falling on and off throughout the day. Chicagoland's First Annual February Fool's Goal Half Marathon/Debacle

A few weeks ago I was looking through the race listings for the month of February and noticed that there are three different races this coming Sunday. All in different cities. As I was trying to decide which one to run I realized that they're all taking place at different times... and then I started thinking... Why not just run all three? I talked to my running homey Antonio and after some discussion about logistics, we realized that based on the timing and location of the races, this would be an insane dash from Chicago to Highland Park to Hoffman Estates to Channahon and back to Chicago, with just enough time to park, get our bibs, run the races and (after carefully stretching, of course) head off to the next one.
